Museum pays tribute to Williamsport's founder



A tribute to Otho Holland Williams, town founder, will be held at the Town Museum on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Matthew Dodd, historian, will share revolutionary songs and stories. Refreshments will be served following his presentation.

The museum is in the historic Springfield Farm Barn. For more information, call Jerry Knode at 301-223-7229.

WES fourth-graders receive writing awards



Students from Williamsport Elementary School were among fourth-graders who entered the Maryland Municipal League's essay writing contest titled "If I Were the Mayor."

Isaac Schlotterbeck's essay was selected as one of 11 winners statewide. His district award was presented at the State House in Annapolis by Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown. Four additional essays from WES students were selected as finalists.

The young writers read their "If I Were the Mayor" essays at the June 8 meeting of the Williamsport Town Council and were presented certificates acknowledging their achievement from Mayor James McCleaf.

Car wash fundraiser planned Saturday



Rehoboth Youth will host a car wash Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Advance Auto Parts on Virginia Avenue.

All proceeds will benefit the Appalachia Service Project mission trip to rebuild and revitalize homes in Appalachia.

Auxiliary plans basket bingo



The Williamsport American Legion Auxiliary will hold a basket bingo Sunday. Tickets cost $25 per person and include a chicken dinner. Doors open at 11 a.m. and bingo starts at 1 p.m.

The event features door prizes, 50/50 and King Tut for baskets. Bring a nonperishable food item to be donated to the Williamsport Food Bank and receive a free pack of specials.

Fundraiser under way for Josh and Katie



Barefoot Bernie's Bar and Grill and the Williamsport Blue Band Boosters invite everyone to help raise funds for Josh Forsythe and Katie Stains.

Come to Barefoot Bernie's today or Thursday for lunch, dinner or a snack. Mention that you are there for the Josh and Katie fundraiser and Barefoot Bernie's will donate 10 percent of your food bill (minus taxes and alcohol). Barefoot Bernie's is at 901 Dual Highway, Hagerstown.

Josh and Katie are students at Williamsport High School who are battling cancer. All money raised will be split equally between Josh and Katie to be used for their mounting medical expenses.

Williamsport plans Fourth of July bash



Fourth of July events in Williamsport will start in Byron Memorial Park at 7 a.m. with a pancake breakfast and continue with many special activities, music selections and food, culminating at dark with one of Washington County's best fireworks displays.

Bring lawn chairs and blankets and make a day of it.

Volunteers sought for elementary schools



The Washington County Commission on Aging is recruiting residents to serve as volunteers in local elementary schools.

The agency's volunteer program, known as RSVP, is recruiting those 55 and older who are willing to help a child improve in math and reading.

Volunteers choose the school, time of day and day of the week that they would like to serve.

Initially, new volunteers are accompanied by an RSVP staff member who paves the way to eventually assisting a child in the classroom.

Volunteers qualify for insurance coverage and reimbursement for travel and meals while gaining recognition as a valuable member of the community.

WHS Mega Reunion planned at HCC



Williamsport High School alumni up to and including the class of 1990 are invited to attend the Mega Reunion planned Saturday, Sept. 19.

The reunion will be held at Hagerstown Community College's ARCC from 6 to 11 p.m.
