Mail Call

June 23, 2009

"I just wanted to know why in the world they would build a new senior center when we have so many empty buildings that they could use, especially the old Lowe's building. Plenty of parking, a new parking lot, the building is huge, perfect location, and we're paying taxes on it, it's sitting empty. What's with this city and county?"

- Hagerstown

"I have lived in Smithsburg all my life, and I have never heard so much controversy regarding our mayor and council. Looks like we should elect a whole new council. I think the mayor has the town as her top priority, and certain members of the council do everything they can to go against her. Let's hear from the older residents of Smithsburg."

- Smithsburg

"There is a very interesting article profiling author Nora Roberts in the June 22 issue of the New Yorker magazine. The magazine is available at the local library."

"I have a comment on the new senior citizens center they're considering at Robinwood. The Dual Highway and Robinwood is congested enough. Please keep it in town where it belongs."

- Maugansville

"I'm calling about the article that was in the paper on insurance, everybody should have it. Me and my wife, and I think everybody else, we pay $2,280 a year into Medicare. If you only go to the doctor's once or twice, you're paying for somebody else's. So don't be trying to say that people on Medicare don't pay anything."

- Hagerstown

"I love what the City of Hagerstown has done with the first block of South Potomac Street. However, I would submit that hanging beer banners on the new wrought iron fences does cheapen the effort to some degree."

- Hagerstown

"We'd like to thank the two ladies and a gentleman who saved our dog from heavy traffic on Route 40 ... on Tuesday the 16th. This dog was rescued from a puppy mill, had been kept in a cage all its life, and really not used to people and traffic. But these people saved the dog, which had gotten away from us. Thank you so very, very much."

- Myersville, Md.

"You can't do both, you can't spay and you can't neuter a cat. You either gotta spay it or neuter it."

- Hagerstown

"I would just like to take a moment to thank Stash, Julie and Sally for their excellent dog-walking service, and the care they provided to my animal while I was recently hospitalized for major surgery and couldn't care for my animal myself. These people were professional, dependable, and treated my dog with all the love and care and respect that I would myself. Thank you guys for doing an excellent job. I would recommend you anytime."

- Boonsboro

"You're gonna build how many schools in 10 years? And who's paying for our water and our sewer debt? Pay that off first before you do anything. Where are the economists in this community? Do you think you can just keep sucking blood out of turnips? Doesn't work that way. Pay this bill off first, then worry about building something."

- Washington County

"Taking Bibles out of VA hospitals, no Ten Commandments displayed, no 'In God We Trust' on the money, no 'One nation under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance, what's next? Is there anyone who thinks this nation has not achieved so much in such a short time that we've been a nation that it happened by chance? God has mostly blessed this nation from the start, but look at us now. The nation's falling apart. There are those whose goal is to systematically remove God from our nation. Guess what - it's working. A nation of immorality, and sinking lower every day."

- Hagerstown

"To the caller who put in about you should judge a woman from their neck up: You shouldn't judge them by how they look ... no matter what, it's about who they are on the inside."

- Hagerstown

"I'd like to know who's paying for all these telephone books we're getting - making them and delivering them - because I don't want them, and every year mine comes straight in and goes to File 13."

- Hagerstown

"It's obvious to me, and probably others, that there's a regular caller from Greencastle who complains about everything. He complains about lack of patriotism, work, conversations at work. Now he's complaining about people who judge others, and on the same day, he complains about women he thinks are stuck-up. Maybe he bothers these ladies, much like he bothers me with his comments in Mail Call."

- Greencastle, Pa.

"I see where Chrysler opened seven plants; four in this country, two in Canada, and one in Mexico. They should all be here, where the taxpayers who bailed them out can have work. So much for 'Buy American.'"

- Hagerstown

"This is about the TVs, the switching to digitals. No static - oh no. It's static all over. You can't see anything, and they said to get a converter box, I got the converter box. OK, the booster, the TV antenna. What else do you need?"

- Dual Highway

"Just thought I'd comment on the article in Thursday morning, June 18, about the road project probably won't be until 2016. Got an idea - why don't they still try to get that Willard Street armory for the senior citizens, because it's in town and it'd be easier for them to get around. Take that $3 million and put it toward that project. We got too much traffic on Eastern Boulevard, and look at the accidents and the recent deaths, and the complaints. I think it'd be money well spent."
