Bicycle ride along Canal towpath to benefit San Mar

June 23, 2009

There is still time to sign up for The Great Bicycle Tour of the C&O Canal to be held July 11 to 14.

Twenty spots remain for the ride, which has been an annual fund-raising event for San Mar Children's Home.

The bike ride will have 105 participants riding the length of the C&O Canal towpath - beginning in Cumberland, Md., and ending 186 miles later in Georgetown, Md. Overnight stops are in Hancock, Williamsport and Frederick, Md.

Participants pay a $35 registration fee and raise at least $450 in pledges ($400 for those riding for only the weekend). For those exceeding minimum amounts, there are prizes awarded for going above and beyond. In the 20 years the event has been held, participants have raised more than $700,000.

For more information, including online registration, go to www.TGBT.org or call Dan Day, San Mar director of development, at 301-733-9067, ext. 101.

The ride helps support San Mar's four group home programs for at-risk adolescent girls, ages 13 to 18, and its treatment foster care program for girls and boys, from birth to age 18.

Brethren Mutual Insurance, Hagerstown, is the lead sponsor for the event. Other sponsors to date include Best Buy, Hagerstown, and Good Ground Consulting, Baltimore.

Helping along the way will be the Cumberland Rotary, Hancock Lions, Hagerstown Lions and Boonsboro Lions. Those groups provide rest stops for the riders, and Wheelbase Bike Shop, Frederick, sends mechanics along to help along the route.
