HAGERSTOWN -- Twenty-one streets in the City of Hagerstown will be repaired this year as part of the city's Pavement Preservation Program.

The Hagerstown City Council on Tuesday voted 4-0 to spend $840,000 to fund the program, which is undertaken every year to ensure municipal streets are properly maintained.

Councilman Lewis C. Metzner was absent.

City Engineer Rodney Tissue said before the council meeting the street improvements will be paid for using $582,000 from bond funding, $184,000 from the city's Capital Improvement Program and $74,000 from Community Development Block Grants.

The streets will receive varying degrees of repair, including crack filling, asphalt overlay and Slurry Seal, a quarter-inch thick sealant that is laid over the road to prevent water from seeping in.

If everything goes as planned, the majority of the work should be completed in July and August, Tissue said. The project is expected to end around November.

Craig Paving Inc. of Hagerstown submitted the lowest bid, according to city documents. Other bids were submitted by C. William Hetzer Inc. ($940,267.67), Huntzberry Bros. Inc. ($963,806.76), L.W. Wolfe Inc. ($976,962.36) and Ross Contracting ($1.05 million).
