County students attending Girls State

North's Abrahams, Smithsburg's Caudell and Goretti's Garvey selected

Vanessa Abrahams, Kassandra Caudell and Margaret Garvey have been selected to attend the 63rd annual Maryland Girls State program at Salisbury (Md.) University from June 21 to 26.

Vanessa attends North Hagerstown High School, Kassandra is a student at Smithsburg High School and Margaret attends St. Maria Goretti High School.

The program is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Maryland Inc. The students are sponsored by locally by Morris Frock American Legion Unit 42.

Selection is based on interest in government and the qualities of leadership, character, honesty, physical fitness, scholarship and cooperativeness.

Girls State is a residential training program for high school girls. The objective is to provide "hands on" training in the management of a democratic government at city, county and state levels.

Topics such as the structure of the various levels of government, simulated legislation, two-party politics and the duties of various government offices will be covered.

The students will also receive a preview of college life and meet peers from schools in different parts of Maryland.

To be eligible, a young woman must have completed her junior year of high school and be in the upper third of her class. She must be a U.S. citizen or a noncitizen attending school and living in Maryland.
