2009 Miss Maryland contestants

Twenty women will compete for the title of Miss Maryland, and a chance to become Miss America, starting Wednesday night.

The four nights of competition, including Friday night's Miss Maryland Outstanding Teen Competition, which will be held at The Maryland Theatre in downtown Hagerstown. The teen contest features 21 contestants.

More than $85,900 in scholarships are up for grabs in the Miss competition. The teen pageant offers $1,075 in scholarships and more than $3,225 in in-kind awards, according to pageant information.

For the Miss Maryland competition, the off-stage interview accounts for 25 percent of the score and the onstage question counts for 5 percent, according to Courtney Thomas with the Miss Maryland Organization. Talent accounts for 35 percent, evening wear for 20 percent and lifestyle and fitness in swimsuit for 15 percent.


The new Miss Maryland will be crowned at the end of the finals competition Saturday night.
