A stabbing early Sunday sent one man to the hospital and another to jail, Hagerstown City Police said.

William Anthony Smith, 47, of 50 Summit Ave., was taken to Washington County Hospital shortly after the 12:50 a.m. incident near the corner of Summit Avenue and Antietam Street, police said.

Smith was stabbed on the left side of his chest, police said.

A nursing supervisor said Sunday afternoon that Smith was in fair condition.

Samuel Lee Taggart, 45, of 55 Avalon Ave. in Hagerstown, was taken into custody shortly after the assault, police said.

Taggart was charged with one count each of first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment, and was being held on $50,000 bond Sunday afternoon at the Washington County Detention Center, authorities said.

Just before 1 a.m. Sunday, an officer with the Hagerstown Police Department was stopped in the area of the first block of West Antietam Street by a citizen who told the officer a man had just been stabbed.

Smith was found to be suffering from an apparent stab wound. Based on information gathered during the investigation, Taggart was found and taken into custody.
