Shirk, Ritter compete at nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Maryland state champions Paige Shirk of Clear Spring and Katie Ritter of North Hagerstown both competed at Nike Outdoor Nationals on Friday.

Shirk placed 17th in the girls shot put with a throw of 39 feet, 10 inches. Ritter finished 27th in the girls "emerging elite" 400-meter dash in 1:00.62.

Both girls set Tri-State records in those events as juniors this past spring -- Shirk at 43-8 1/2 and Ritter at 57.08.

BASEBALL



Crist signs with W.Va. State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- Recent Clear Spring graduate Kyle Crist has signed a letter of intent to attend West Virginia State University and play baseball for the Yellow Jackets.

Crist is a two-time Herald-Mail All-County selection. This spring for the Blazers, Crist went 4-0 pitching with a 1.86 earned run average with 43 strikeouts in 31 innings. At the plate, he hit .453 with 23 RBIs.

Coached by Cal Bailey, West Virginia State has made 11 NCAA Division II tournament appearances in the last 12 years.

The 19th annual Commerce Cup Golf Tournament will be held July 17 at Black Rock Golf Course with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

Joey P. out of Charles Town Dash

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. -- Joey P., second choice in the morning line, will be scratched from tonight's Charles Town Invitational Dash. The 7-year-old gelding, who won the race in 2008, underwent colic surgery Thursday night and won't run. Joey P.'s defection most likely will leave Ikigai as the clear favorite in the 4 1/2-furlong race.

Post time for the second annual Charles Town Sprint Festival will be 6 p.m. with the Charles Town Dash slated to be the ninth race at 9:30.

Rams add four to Hall of Fame

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- The Shepherd University Athletic Hall of Fame will induct four new members on Sept. 18 at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center in Shepherdstown. The quartet will also be honored at the Rams' home football game against Seton Hill on Sept. 19.

Former coach Ed Fincham and former women's basketball star Jennifer Chapman Goldsmith (2000) will join former football standouts John Treadway (1989) and Brian Lamb (1999) as the 24th class to be inducted. They'll bring the total number of members in the Shepherd Athletic Hall of Fame to 117.
