The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Madison Vida of Hagerstown has been recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Student Award winner.

Madison attends Williamsport High School. Her name will appear in the academy's official yearbook, which is published nationally.

She is the daughter of Kevin and Shawna Vida of Hagerstown and the granddaughter of Joan Joans of Elkins, W.Va., and Paul and Brawyn Vida of Weirton, W.Va.




On May 6, Ashley Nichole Bockstanz received a certificate of achievement from Hagerstown Elks Lodge 378 for being named Teenager of the Year for 2008-09.

She also received the following:

o A certificate of merit from the Washington County Commissioners.

o A certificate of outstanding recognition from the City of Hagerstown.

o Recognition came from Sen. Don Munson and the governor's office.

o A certificate of special recognition was received for being South Hagerstown High School's Student of the Year.

Ashley graduated June 6.

She is the daughter of Larry and Debra Brelsford Bockstanz, who graduated from South High in 1985. She is the granddaughter of Rose (Hoover/Brelsford) McDonald, who graduated from South High in 1958.




Kenzie Bowen of Smithsburg has been named to the dean's list in the University of Notre Dame's College of Engineering for outstanding scholarship during the spring semester.

Students who achieve dean's list honors at Notre Dame represent the top 30 percent of students in their college.

Kenzie is majoring in chemical engineering. She is a Smithsburg High School graduate.

She is the daughter of John and Denise Bowen.




The United States Achievement Academy has announced that Casey Osborne of Williamsport has been recognized for academic achievement as a U.S. National Honor Student Award winner.

Osborne, who attends Williamsport High School, will appear in the academy's yearbook, which is published nationally.

She is the daughter of Craig and Brandy Osborne of Williamsport and the granddaughter of Jay and Vicki Grimes of Williamsport and Major and Vangie Osborne of Williamsport and the great-granddaughter of Rich and Mill Grimes of Williamsport.




WINCHESTER, Va. - Evan M. Lowery graduated cum laude from Shenandoah University May 10 with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry and a minor in mathematics.

Evan graduated from Boonsboro High School in 2006. He was awarded the outstanding chemistry senior at Shenandoah and was named in the Who's Who Among Students in American colleges and Universities for 2009.

While at Shenandoah, Evan was a member of the men's soccer and tennis teams. He was named to the USA South Academic All-Conference Team. In March, during spring break, he traveled to Romania for 10 days as part of Shenandoah's Global Citizenship program.

Evan has been accepted in the doctorate program at the University of Virginia for the fall semester in the chemistry department.

Evan is the son of Sheila Lowery and Wayne Lowery of Boonsboro.




ANNAPOLIS - Joe Carpenter, the grandson of Bob and Hedi Belz of Clear Spring, has been invited to attend the Naval Academy Summer Seminar.

The seminar is for students who have completed their junior year in high school and are considering applying for admission to the academy after graduation.

Joe is a student at Highland High School in Gilbert, Ariz. He is the son of Victor and Barbara Belz Carpenter of Gilbert.




SEARCY, Ark. - Jaclyn Garrish of Hagerstown has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Harding University.

She is a sophomore majoring in communication sciences and disorders.




MONT ALTO, Pa. - Kelsie Myers has been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Penn State University, Mont Alto campus.

Kelsie is majoring in wildlife and fisheries science and will attend the main campus in State College, Pa., next semester.

She is a 2007 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim (Pa.) High School.

She is the daughter of Teresa and Michael Myers of Greencastle.




PENSACOLA, Fla. - Justin Daniel Simpson earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering May 9 from Pensacola Christian College.

As a result of earning a B average or higher, he was also named to the dean's list.

He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Lee Simpson of Hagerstown.




GROVE CITY, Pa. - The following area students were named to the dean's list with high distinction for the spring semester at Grove City College:

o Kevin Sandell of Boonsboro, who is majoring in elementary education.He is the son of the Rev. Mark and Annette Sandell.

He is a 2005 graduate of Heritage Academy

o Diana Stottlemyer of Greencastle, Pa., who is majoring in English.

She is a 2008 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School.

She is the daughter of Barry and Amanda Stottlemyer of Waynesboro, Pa.




PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The following area residents have been named to the dean's list for the spring semester at Providence College:

o Daniel Taylor of Keedysville, a member of the class of 2009

o Emily McCormack of Hagerstown, a member of the class of 2009
