WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Mr. Paul E. Miller, 79, of 217 Landis Ave., Waynesboro, Pa., was pronounced dead at 7:09 a.m., Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in his home. Death was unexpected and attributed to heart failure.

Born Aug. 13, 1929, in Yoe, Pa., he was the son of the late Rev. Joseph H. and Dora M. (DeWire) Miller. He spent his early life in the Baltimore, Md., and York, Pa., areas.

Mr. Miller was a graduate of Carlisle High School with the class of 1947. He attended Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict with the 216th CML Service Co., Rocky Mountain Arsenal, in Denver, Colo. He also served 3 1/2 months at the Atomic Testing Ground at Camp Mercury, Nev.


He and his wife of almost 58 years, Mrs. Madeline F. "Maddie" (Stum) Miller, were married Aug. 26, 1951, in Carlisle. They had lived at their present residence since 1970.

Mr. Miller was employed at former J.C. Penney Department Store, Waynesboro, for 36 years, where he served as store manager for the last 19 years.

He was a member of Otterbein Church of Waynesboro, Waynesboro YMCA, Retail Merchants Bureau and National AARP. He also taught Sunday school in various area churches.

Mr. Miller enjoyed spending time with his family and going to his grandchildren's events, playing softball, badminton, tennis, and playing basketball at the YMCA right up to the last few weeks. He also participated in the Pa. Senior Games and National Senior Olympics, receiving numerous awards and ribbons.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Marcy A. Miller Rost of Waynesboro; two sons, Steven A. Miller of Long Boat Key, Fla., and Douglas S. Miller of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Louise Rowe of Palermo, Maine, and Ruth Anna Rote of Lock Haven, Pa.; a brother, David D. Miller of Binghamton, N.Y.; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph H. Miller Jr.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 21, 2009, in Otterbein Church, 801 Park St., Waynesboro, with the Rev. John A. Mullen officiating. Burial will be in Westminster Cemetery, Inc., Carlisle, at the convenience of the family.

There will be no public viewing, but the family will receive friends one hour prior to services in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Otterbein Church Building Fund, 801 Park St., Waynesboro, PA 17268.
