June 18, 2009|By DAN DEARTH

The City of Hagerstown has begun removing butterfly statues that were on display downtown as part of an effort to raise money for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts.

Some of the butterflies, which were to be on display until Friday, have been taken to The Maryland Theatre, where they'll be auctioned during a gala from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Saturday, said Dale Bannon, director of system development for Washington County Public Schools.

Ten of the statues will be auctioned inside the theater, Bannon said. The remaining 20 will be on display along South Potomac Street and inside the school at 7-11 S. Potomac St.

Bannon said about 600 people are expected to attend.
