I-81 initiative nets drugs, cash, handgun, arrests



Various amounts of marijuana, hashish, ecstasy, codeine and hallucinogenic mushrooms were confiscated during a Interstate 81 interdiction initiative led recently by the Washington County Sheriff's Office and the Maryland State Police, according to a press release.

The effort, conducted in Washington County June 9 through Monday, also resulted in the seizure of a handgun and $1,600 in cash, according to the release.

The initiative resulted in 26 adult arrests, the release said.

Martinsburg men face drug charges after police sting



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Two men face drug dealing-related charges after allegedly engaging in deals with a confidential informant set up by the Martinsburg Police Department, the agency announced this week.

Justin William Ponton, 25, of 409 W. Race St., was charged with one felony count of conspiracy to deliver an imitation controlled substance, according to the announcement.

Jason Jamar Ross, 20, of 904 W. Burke St., was charged with delivery of an imitation controlled substance and obstructing, according to a news release.

Jefferson County man charged with fleeing while DUI



MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A Charles Town, W.Va., man was arraigned Wednesday on one count of fleeing from police in a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, according to Berkeley Count Magistrate Court records.

Frank Leonard Cheek, 43, of 428 Spruce Hill Drive, was arraigned by Magistrate Joan V. Bragg who set a $10,000 bond for the defendant, according to court records.

While driving a Chevrolet Impala east on Charles Town Road (W.Va. 9) on Tuesday, Cheek was allegedly traveling 78 miles per hour, according to a complaint by Berkeley County Sheriff's Department deputy C.N. Farmer, who measured the speed with radar.

The driver did not stop when pursued by the sheriff's deputy, traveling two to three miles before stopping in the Tackett's Pub parking lot, east of Martinsburg, according to court records.

The Washington County Sheriff's Department responded recently to the following incidents, according to Lt. Mark Knight:

Wednesday, June 17:

o At 12:06 a.m., an assault was reported in the 11800 block of Oriole Drive. Someone was struck by a vehicle.

o At 3:46 a.m., a domestic incident was reported in the 100 block of Conococheague Street in Williamsport.

o At 8:17 a.m., malicious destruction of property was reported in the 11300 block of Youngstoun Drive. Someone broke off a mirror and scratched a slur into the hood.

o At 9:55 a.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 17800 block of Lappans Road. Someone broke out a window and tried to pry open a door.

o At 10:45 a.m., theft from a motor vehicle was reported in the 8000 block of Avis Mill Road. Someone stole a cell phone from a vehicle.

o At 1:53 p.m., drug violations were reported in the area of Mulberry Street in Clear Spring. Someone forged a prescription.

o At 4:07 p.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 22200 block of Ringgold Pike. Someone damaged a door during an attempted breaking and entering.

o At 6:08 p.m., theft from a motor vehicle was reported in the 1000 block of Security Road. Someone took cash from a vehicle and other property in a field behind the home.

o At 6:47 p.m., malicious destruction of property was reported in the 16900 block of Halfway Boulevard, at the Pilot Travel Center. Some cut the brake line on a truck.

o At 7:35 p.m., theft from a motor vehicle was reported in the area of Oak Tree Lane in Williamsport. Someone took tools from a work van.

o At 8:27 p.m., a domestic incident was reported in the 17100 block of Cole Road.

o At 8:58 p.m., drug violations were reported in the area of Coffman Farm Road and Md. 34.

Thursday, June 18:

o At 6:07 a.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 21100 block of Millers Church Road. Someone broke out the windows of a home and took sodas.

o At 10:50 a.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 13200 block of Clopper Road. Someone took cash from a home.

o At 11:28 a.m., malicious destruction of property was reported in the 11800 block of Peacock Trail. Someone damaged a vehicle by shooting it with a BB gun.

o At 4:50 p.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 11200 block of Lakeview Drive. Someone broke into a vacant trailer.

o At 6:28 p.m., shoplifting was reported at Kohl's, in the 17100 block of Cole Road. Someone tried to steal shoes, but they were recovered.

o At 6:28 p.m., malicious destruction of property was reported on Hippity Hop Lane. Someone damaged a house.

o At 7:12 p.m., breaking and entering was reported in the 4700 block of Toyer Road. Someone took chainsaws from a shed.

o At 8:42 p.m., theft was reported at the AC&T in the 16500 block of Virginia Avenue. Someone took a cell phone.
