Fire hall's bell tower to be removed

June 18, 2009

WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- The Waynesboro Borough Council on Wednesday agreed with a staff recommendation that the bell tower on the South Potomac Street fire station be removed when the roof is replaced in coming months.

"I've talked to some of the firemen, and they don't have a sentimental attachment to the tower. They do to the bell," Councilman Ronnie Martin said.

"We'd like to keep the bell and maybe part of the tower supporting the bell," Fire Chief Dave Martin said.

Ronnie Martin made a motion that the tower be removed and the bell given to the fire department for preservation.

Bids will be sought for the project, which has an estimated cost of $60,000 to $75,000.
