One person killed in crash in Jefferson County

June 18, 2009|By MATTHEW UMSTEAD

MIDDLEWAY, W.Va. -- A 19-year-old Charles Town, W.Va., woman was killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle accident near the entrance to The Country Day School on W.Va. 51, according to the Jefferson County (W.Va.) Sheriff's Department.

Kayla C. Whidden was pronounced dead at the scene by county medical examiner Carole Spessert, according to Sgt. R.S. Sell.

Whidden was driving a 1994 green Honda Accord west toward Inwood, W.Va., when the car crossed the center line of the road after cresting a hill and collided head-on with an eastbound 2005 International rollback flatbed truck about 1:30 p.m., Sell said.

Truck driver Richard A. Kelly, 55, of Hedgesville, W.Va. was not injured or at fault in the accident, but he was "shaken up" by the woman's death, Sell said.

The car was traveling downhill near Shady Acres subdivision when it moved left of center "for whatever reason," Sell said.

Both vehicles were towed from the accident, which closed the road between Darke Lane and Childs Road for several hours. The road reopened at about 4 p.m., officials said.

Debris was scattered across a large area, Sell said.

Sell said he did not know Whidden's destination and he was unable to determine if she was wearing a seat belt due to the extent of damage to the car.

Emergency responders with Citizens, Independent and Middleway volunteer fire companies and West Virginia State Police responded to the accident.
