Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there

Isn't there an old adage about the lazy days of summer?

I can't even begin to imagine. So far, this summer has been anything but lazy.

With Father's Day on Sunday, I have a feeling that extra activities will be on the agenda to make sure all of the dads get recognition for all the hours pushing the lawn mower and pitching the ball in the backyard. Happy Father's Day.

St. Paul's Church to hold Bible school

St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown will hold a vacation Bible school titled "Discovery Canyon" for those ages 3 through sixth grade.

The adventure begins Sunday and continues through Friday, June 26, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Call 301-791-1738 to register.

Chicken barbecue

Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. will hold a chicken barbecue Saturday, June 27, beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The featured item will be one-half chicken, but ham, pit beef and Italian sausage sandwiches also will be available. Meals are also available. The Ladies Auxiliary will hold a bake sale, as well.

Don't forget the Texas Roadhouse fundraiser this week to help the animals at the Humane Society of Washington County.

The restaurant, off Dual Highway at Edgewood Road, will donate 10 percent of food sales to the shelter through Thursday.

Go to and click on Upcoming Events to print out a coupon for the fundraiser. Present the coupon to your server. Coupons are also available at the shelter at 13011 Maugansville Road. Call 301-733-2060 for more information.

On Thursday, there will be an appearance by the life-size Andy the Armadillo mascot.
