BOONSBORO - Arthur Franklin Bayer, 89, of Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, and formerly of Barkdoll Road, Ringgold, Md., died at Washington County Hospital Sunday, June 14, 2009, on his 89th birthday following an extended illness.

He was born June 14, 1920, in Edgemont, Md., the son of the late Ira F. and Mary (Benedict) Bayer.

He retired from Landis Tool Co. in Waynesboro, Pa.

He and his wife would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary June 18, 2009.

Following his retirement, he turned a beloved hobby of chair caning into a business and ran A&F Chairs until 2004. He attended many craft shows and was well-known for his extraordinary chair-caning skills. He also taught caning classes at Hagerstown Community College and James Rumsey Technical Institute in Martinsburg, W.Va.

He was a member and former elder at Ringgold Church of Christ, charter member of Ringgold Ruritan Club, former zone and district governor of Potomac District, member of the Sunshine Leisure Club, former secretary-treasurer of the Ringgold Cemetery, and he also took great pride in being caretaker for the Ringgold Cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Frances L. (Barkdoll) Bayer; four sons, Larry (Susan) Bayer of Hagerstown, Denny (Barbara) Bayer of Knoxville, Md., Randy (Victoria) Bayer of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Tony (Liz) O'Hara of Boothwyn, Pa.; grandchildren, Tanner (fiance Amanda Yellott) Bayer, Jacy Bayer, Julie (Douglas) Bayer-Vile, Aubrey (Greg) Bruno, Justine O'Hara, Meghan O'Hara and Colleen O'Hara; three stepgrandchildren, Becky O'Connell, Sarah Few and Peyton Whetsel; two great-granddaughters, Bella and Gianna Bruno; two stepgreat- grandchildren, Carter Yellott and Kameron McConnell; one brother, Walter (Mildred) Bayer of Covington, Ohio; sister, Elizabeth Strike of Chambersburg, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the caring staff at Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home, Dr. Vincent Cantone and the staff of Smithsburg Family Practice, and the staff of the Emergency Department and 8E at Washington County Hospital.

Services will be Thursday, June 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Don Conley officiating at Ringgold Church of Christ. Burial will be in Ringgold Cemetery.

Friends may call at J.L. Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg, Wednesday, June 17, 2009, from 6 to 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in memory of Arthur to Fahrney Keedy Memorial Home, 8507 Mapleville Road, Boonsboro, MD 21713.
