Battlefield to host Juneteenth event

June 16, 2009

Juneteenth is a holiday that has its origins in the freedom of more than 250,000 slaves in Texas at the close of the Civil War.

The celebration takes its name from June 19, 1865 - the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday is now celebrated nationwide to celebrate the end of slavery in the United States.

Antietam National Battlefield, in cooperation with the National Juneteenth Museum Without Walls, will host a Juneteenth program at the park Visitor Center Sunday. The day will feature guest speakers and period music.

Presentations will be made at 11 a.m., 1 and 2 p.m.
