Volunteers sought

The Washington County Commission on Aging is recruiting residents to serve as volunteers in local elementary schools this fall.

The agency's volunteer program, known as RSVP, is recruiting those 55 and older who are willing to help children improve in arithmetic and reading.

Volunteers choose the school, time of day and day of the week that they would like to serve.

Initially, new volunteers are accompanied by an RSVP staff member who paves the way to eventually assisting children in the classroom.

During the past school year, RSVP volunteers included men and women from different backgrounds who gave a little personal time to schoolchildren. Without exception, they all said the experience left them feeling uplifted and useful; they all want to continue in the fall.

There are rewards for joining the program. Volunteers qualify for insurance coverage and reimbursement for travel and meals while gaining recognition as a valuable member of their community.

To register, call Charlotte R. Levens, intergenerational program coordinator, at 240-313-9139 or e-mail crlevens@aol.com, or Hannah Cramer, deputy director, at 301-790-0275.
