Park to offer free weekends

June 15, 2009

HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. (AP) - The National Park Service is doing its part to make sure Americans have a chance for some free fun this summer.

For three summer weekends, the park service is lifting the entrance fees at 147 parks nationwide, including Harpers Ferry (W.Va.) National Historical Park.

The first free weekend is June 20 and 21. Park Superintendent Rebecca Harriett said special programs are set for the other two weekends, July 18 and 19 and Aug. 15 and 16.

The park was the site of abolitionist John Brown's failed raid on a federal arsenal, now considered a key event leading up to the Civil War.
