Girl, 4, dies in fall from dorm window

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- A 4-year-old girl fell from a third-floor window in a Wilson College residence hall Sunday and died.

Franklin County (Pa.) Coroner Jeffrey R. Conner said Ivyonna A. Robinson fell from a Prentis Hall window at 11:49 a.m. and was pronounced dead of blunt-force head trauma at 12:15 p.m.

Prentis Hall is a dormitory used by students enrolled in the "women with children" program. That program allows full-time students who are single mothers to live year-round with their children, college spokeswoman Debra Collins said.

The child, whose bed was next to a window, apparently opened the screen and fell 27 feet, Conner said in a news release.

"The window screen and window can be opened. None of the dormitories are air-conditioned," Collins said.

Conner said the girl was sitting on or standing near the window ledge. She had food in her hand when she fell to the ground or sidewalk.

The girl's mother reported that the window was open, but the screen was closed before the incident, Conner said.

Collins said she could not provide additional details about how campus staff responded to the incident until Chambersburg police made a report available.

Chambersburg police did not immediately return a phone message Monday.

Conner said Ivyonna was pronounced dead in Chambersburg Hospital's emergency room. He classified the incident as "accidental" in his news release.

Conner did not release the mother's name.

The college's dean of students reported that 22 students were enrolled in the women-with-children program in 2008-09. Together, they brought 24 children to the campus.

Approximately half of those students and their children remain on campus this summer.
