Berkeley schools chief's contract renewed

June 15, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- Berkeley County Board of Education members voted unanimously Monday night to renew the contract for Superintendent of Schools Manny Arvon for another year, according to a school system spokeswoman.

The new contract will become effective July 1 and extend until June 30 of next year, said Leah Catlett.

In February 2005, the board of education gave a four-year contract to Arvon, who has been head of the school system about 12 years.

There are time limits when a one-year and four-year contract can be offered, Board of Education member Bill Norris said after Monday night's meeting.

Because of the timing, the board of education only gave Arvon a one-year contract, but it probably will revisit the issue, Norris said.

"He wants to stay on a lot longer," Norris said of Arvon.

Norris said the board of education increased Arvon's salary, but he did not have the figures on hand.

"He's worth every cent," Norris said.
