Smithsburg senior Josh Conway is the 2009 Herald-Mail All-Washington County Player of the Year.

Conway posted a .500 batting average and a 1.00 earned run average pitching.

The 2009 Washington County Baseball First Team:

Josh Conway, Smithsburg, Sr., P-OF

Mr. Everywhere for Smithsburg. On the mound, Conway went 4-0 with a 1.00 ERA and 52 strikeouts in 35 innings. At the plate, he hit .500 (27-54) with five home runs. He also stole 16 bases. Is a repeat All-County performer.

Josh Kehr, Clear Spring, Sr., P

Kehr posted a 1.10 ERA with a 4-0 record for the Blazers. In 41 innings, allowed only 32 hits and struck out 50.


Kyle Crist, Clear Spring, Sr., P

Crist was 4-0 with a 1.92 ERA for the Blazers. He struck out 40 in 29 innings and allowed only 19 hits. He also hit .415 and contributed 22 RBIs. Is a repeat All-County player.

J.J. O'Neill, St. Maria Goretti, Sr., P

O'Neill struck out 63 in 45 1/3 innings of work and went 3-4 with a 5.25 ERA -- numbers that would have been better with a better defense. He also hit .435 with 3 HRs and 25 RBIs.

Greg Lynn, North Hagerstown, Jr., P

Lynn came on strong and finished 3-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 39 innings. Helped North win three postseason games. Walked only 10 and struck out 28.

Jordan Thurber, Clear Spring, Sr., OF

Thurber hit .437 for the Blazers with 4 HRs and 22 RBIs. Stroked 11 doubles, scored 17 runs in 18 games and had an eye at the plate with 28 walks, several intentional. Is a repeat All-County player.

Seth Poffenberger, Boonsboro, Sr., OF

Poffenberger hit .429 (21-for-49) in 15 games and drove in 19 runs for the Warriors. Among the top base thiefs around with 19.

Nic Martin, St. Maria Goretti, Jr., OF

Martin hit .407 (33-for-81) for the Gaels and scored 34 runs in 22 games. Had 8 doubles, 6 HRs and 16 RBIs.

Ty Benson, North Hagerstown, Soph., OF

Benson hit .327 (16-for-49) and had 14 walks for the Hubs -- another player that got better as the year progressed.

Brandon Glazer, Clear Spring, Sr., SS

Among the top hitters all year, Glazer ended at .483 (29-for-60) and scored 22 runs for the Blazers. Produced 23 RBIs, had 15 walks and stole 14 bases.

Jack Schwartz, Smithsburg, Jr., 3B

Schwartz hit .375 (21-for-56) for the Leopards and made the hits count with 20 RBIs, many at key moments. Had a county-high 7 homers.

Jeremy Barron, North Hagerstown, Sr., 2B

Barron hit .333 (18-for-54) for the Hubs. He drove in 19 runs and walked 15 times. Played better baseball as the season wore on.

Will Murray, St. Maria Goretti, Sr., 1B

Murray hit .400 (28-for-70) for the Gaels. Also pitched and played some third base. Drove in a County-high 30 runs.

Jake Gouff, Smithsburg, Jr., C

Became a strong defensive asset for the Leopards beind the plate and hit .389 (21-for-54). Drove in 11 runs and had 8 stolen bases.

Jay Shafer, Smithsburg, Sr., Utility

Versatile player for the Leopards in the field at short and on the mound. Hit .377 (23-for-61) and drove in 13 runs. On the hill he was 2-2 with 3 saves and a 1.20 ERA in 23 1/3 innings.
