New traffic signal activated

June 11, 2009

A new traffic signal was activated Thursday in a heavily traveled area along Greencastle Pike at the Pilot Travel Center west of Hagerstown, according to a Maryland State Highway Administration press release.

Trucks often back up along Greencastle Pike and the exit ramps from Interstate 70 as they wait to access the Pilot Travel Center, and it is hoped the traffic signal will improve safety in the area, the highway administration said.

The Pilot Travel Center will reimburse the highway administration for one-third of the cost of the $81,000 improvement and make additional access improvements to its facility, the highway administration said.

Del. LeRoy E. Myers Jr., R-Washington/Allegany, joined state highway traffic engineers to switch the signal to full operation, the highway administration said.

Myers' son, Ryan Andrew Myers, 23, was killed April 9 when he crashed the motorcycle he was riding on Greencastle Pike at the Pilot Travel Center.

Ryan Myers lost control of the motorcycle and skidded about 300 feet when he was struck by a tractor-trailer.
