Student organizes drive for animals

June 11, 2009

Meghan Leather, a fourth-grader at Grace Academy, recently completed a "Heart to Serve" project that was developed to help the homeless animals at the Humane Society of Washington County. Her classmates in Marilyn Ruth's class as well as fourth-graders in Ellen Brown's class participated in the project which raised $73 for the shelter.

The project was organized by Meghan, who took up a collection to help the animals. The staff at Grace Academy was very impressed with Meghan's initiative.

"We are very proud of Meghan," said Barbara J. Hoover, office manager and administrative secretary. "She initiated this project independently, organizing and implementing each phase by herself."

Meghan's classmates in Ruth's class helped her collect donations for the shelter as did students in Brown's class. When asked what had been Meghan's inspiration, her mother, Lynn Leather said, "Her love for animals. Meghan loves animals so she wanted this project to be for them."
