WILLIAMSPORT, Md. -- James Montgomery Schurz, 76, of 10713 Bratton Court in Williamsport, Md., died Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at his home peacefully with his family by his side.

He was born May 2, 1933, in South Bend, Ind., to the late Franklin Dunn Sr. and Martha Montgomery Schurz.

He attended Stanford University, Northwestern University, Thacher School and James Madison School.

He was senior vice president of Schurz Communications Inc.

He had been editor and publisher of The Herald-Mail Co. in Hagerstown, Md. He started his career in newspapers at the San Francisco Examiner, working as a reporter from 1956 to 1967.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict.

He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in St. James, Md.

He was a member of IORM 84 of Williamsport, Md.; Potomac American Legion Post 202 of Williamsport, Md.; and The Maryland Club of Baltimore, Md.


Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Kelley Schurz, married for 14 years, of Williamsport, Md.; son, Todd Schurz and his wife, Stephanie, of South Bend, Ind.; son, Jim Schurz and his wife, Julie, of Mill Valley, Calif.; son, Walker Schurz and his wife, Haley, of Lusaka, Zambia; son, Hayne Schurz and his wife, Heather, of Tulsa, Okla.; son, Nicholas Mohar-Schurz, at home; beloved pet, Rascal; sister, Mary Schurz of Danville, Ky.; brother, Franklin D. Schurz Jr. and his wife, Bethany, of Bozeman, Mont.; brother, Scott C. Schurz Sr. and his wife, Kathryn, of Bloomington, Ind.; grandchildren: Anthony, Caroline, Max, Timothy, Claire, Jessica, Grace, Daniel, Caroline Sophia, and Katharine; nephew, Scott C. Schurz Jr. and his wife, Steph; nephew, John D. Schurz and his wife, Rachel; and niece, Alexandra Gewant and her husband, David.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 12, 2009, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Osborne Funeral Home, 425 S. Conococheague St., Williamsport, Md. The funeral home will be open Friday after 9 a.m. for the convenience of family and friends.

A memorial service will be Saturday, June 13, 2009, at 4 p.m., at St. James Episcopal Church on the St. James School campus, with Father D. Stuart Dunnan officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
