Girl thinks about the shelter instead of herself at birthday

June 11, 2009

When Alexa Vetter requested a pool party for her 11th birthday, she hadn't planned on having a big party. Since it grew into a large affair, she decided to have her guests purchase gifts for the homeless animals at the Humane Society of Washington County instead of presents for her.

"We didn't originally intend to have a large party, but since it was held inside at the YMCA pool in Waynesboro, Pa., Alexa could invite a lot of people," said Alexa's mother Jeanna Vetter.

"She just felt that there would be too many gifts for her if she accepted presents so she decided to donate what would have been her gifts to the homeless animals at the shelter."

Those gifts were brought to the shelter by Alexa's father, Bob.

When asked why she thought her daughter chose the Humane Society, Jeanna Vetter said, "Well, she adores animals and since our dog Noel came from the Humane Society it just seemed natural." Noel, a Basenji-Jack Russell terrier mix, was adopted by the Vetter family in December 1995.

Alexa will attend Smithsburg Middle School in the fall. She hopes to one day be an interior designer.
