'Joy ride' ends when 14-year-old driver crashes SUV

June 10, 2009

FANNETTSBURG, Pa. -- A 14-year-old driving an SUV with two younger children as passengers was injured early Wednesday when the vehicle ran off the roadway and struck a tree, Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

After interviewing the driver and her mother, police said they determined that the mother frequently allows her children to take the SUV "on 'joy rides' through Fannettsburg," the release said.

The crash took place at 12:55 a.m. on Schriby Road, one mile north of Pa. 533 in Metal Township, police said.

The girl was driving a 1995 Ford Explorer northbound at an excessive rate of speed when she lost control of the SUV on a curve. The vehicle struck a tree, drifted down a hill and went back across the roadway, police said.
