Lightning blamed in Martinsburg house fire

June 10, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Lightning from a fast moving thunderstorm apparently caused a small fire at a home in Martinsburg Tuesday afternoon, resulting in minor damage, according to a Martinsburg Fire Department investigator.

No one was injured.

A rear corner of a white stucco, two-story home at 605 S. Queen St., ignited in flames, apparently because of a power surge caused by lightning, according to fire investigator Jason Hoover.

No evidence of a direct lightning strike could be found at the home, which firefighters were dispatched to at 4:45 p.m., Hoover said.

The fire was initially reported as a transformer fire, Hoover said.
