McCoy shuts down BlueClaws

June 09, 2009

LAKEWOOD, N.J. -- Patrick McCoy pitched 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief and Steven Souza homered to help the Hagerstown Suns to a 4-3 victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws on Tuesday.

McCoy was brilliant in relief of starter Matt Chico, who is on an injury rehab assignment with the Suns. McCoy came on to start the third inning and allowed just three hits while striking out six and pitching into the ninth.

Osvaldo Rodriguez got the final two outs for his ninth save.

The Suns took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Charlie Fermaint had a one-out single and scored on Nick Arata's triple. Robert Jacobsen drove in Arata with a base hit before eventually scoring on an error by Lakewood third baseman Travis Mattair.

The BlueClaws got two runs back in the bottom of the second off Chico. Steve Susdorf started the inning with a home run to right field. Chico struck out the next two batters, but Sebastian Valle doubled and scored on Zachary Collier's base hit.

Souza provided the Suns an insurance run with his home run to start the sixth.

Chico was the Washington Nationals' opening-day starter in 2008. He went 0-6 before being sent to Triple-A Columbus in May. Shortly after his demotion, he was shut down for the year and underwent Tommy John surgery last July.
