$10 donations sought for Smithsburg center

SMITHSBURG -- Raising funds for the proposed Smithsburg JRL Community Center is truly a numbers game.

"We stumbled onto the fact that at six seconds and five minutes after 4 a.m. on July 8, 2009, it will be 04, 05, 06 07/08/09, and it just popped into our heads that we could use the uniqueness of this series to ask as many people and businesses as we can to 'Be our 10' and donate $10," said Lisa Linthicum.

She said the hope is to use the campaign to not only raise money, but awareness about the programs and services the community center could offer.

"If just the area businesses step up and meet our modest request, it could result in the kind of windfall we need to produce our vital and important services," she said.

The goal is to offer community members a safe place to go, one that will offer games, resources on suicide, teenage pregnancy and a place where young and old can come together and help each other, Linthicum said.

The bottom line is that Smithsburg community residents and businesses could donate $10 by July 8.

"This time and date won't come around again for 1,000 years," she said.

All contributions to the Smithsburg JRL Community Center are tax-deductible if sent in through the Town of Smithsburg. Donations may be sent to Friends of the Smithsburg JRL Community Center, P.O. Box 237, Smithsburg, MD 21783.
