Greencastle moves into PIAA state softball final

HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. -- Greencastle scored four runs in the third inning to support a strong outing from starter Autumn Appleby, and the Blue Devils advanced to the PIAA Class AAA state finals with a 6-2 win over Trinity on Monday.

Meghin Palmer scored the first run of the game by stealing home with the bases loaded in the third. After a Rachel Kline fielders choice and a passed ball plated two more runs, Diamond Byers hit an RBI single to put Greencastle ahead, 4-0. Rachel Statler added some insurance runs with a two-run single in the fourth inning.

Appleby pitched 5 1/3 innings for the Blue Devils, giving up six hits. She walked two and struck out eight to improve her record to 11-2.

Greencastle (27-3) will play Bethlehem Catholic in the Class AAA final Friday at 4 p.m. at Robb Field at Shippensburg University.

Parkland 2, Waynesboro 0

ANNVILLE, Pa. -- Deanna Stinner pitched a six-hit shutout as Parkland beat Waynesboro in the PIAA Class AAAA state semifinals.

Parkland (24-4) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning and made it 2-0 in the third.

Taryn Ashway went the distance for the Maidens (23-4), allowing two runs, five hits and a walk while striking out seven. Ashway also went 3-for-3 at the plate, while teammate Meghan Decker went 2-for-3.
