Divots -- Tri-State Juniors opener set for June 22

The Tri-State Junior Golf Association will conduct tournaments at five area golf clubs this summer.

The season begins on June 22 at Waynesboro Country Club, as golfers will compete in the 12-13, 14-15 and 16-18 age divisions.

Fountain Head Country Club will host the June 29 event, followed by Black Rock on July 6, Stonebridge on July 27 and the Tournament of Champions event to culminate the season at Beaver Creek on Aug. 10.

Play will begin at 8:30 a.m., in a shotgun format at each venue. Players who still would like to play in the opener at Waynesboro can contact the club until June 14.


More juniors

The Chesapeake Area Youth Recreation Association is conducting a Mid-Maryland Junior Golf Tour beginning with a skills assessment day on June 14 at the Links at Challedon in Westminster, Md.

Subsequent playing dates will be on Sunday afternoons at courses such as Beaver Creek, Hollow Creek, Worthington Manor, Maple Run and Links at Challedon during the five-week series.

Outings notebook

* The Mid-Atlantic Coaches Classic hosted by Cokey Robertson was washed out on Friday. July 10 has been set as the make-up date for the event at Beaver Creek Country Club.

The two-man best-ball event will feature a shotgun start beginning at noon. There are openings available. For information, contact Robertson at 301-824-6044.

* The annual Cumberland Valley Terrapin Club outing will be held July 22 at Beaver Creek with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., for the four-man scramble format. It's also followed by an excellent crab feed and buffet.

* The first annual Michael Kade Fotta Golf Tournament will be held at Black Rock on July 31, with proceeds going to the Listening Center at Johns Hopkins for children with Cochlear Implants.

The tournament is dedicated to a 7-year-old who has had the implant for nearly six years and is able to play sports because of it.

USGA Qualifier

Black Rock will host a USGA qualifier for the Amateur Public Links championship. Black Rock director of golf Darrell Whittington said 60 players are on the list to play, coming into town from areas ranging from Virginia to Las Vegas.

The qualifier will be a tough 36-hole test in one day, with players looking for a spot in the championship July 13-18 at The University of Oklahoma Golf Club.

Local players in the field include Brandon Sheaffer and Jeff Snowden.

Holed it out

Max Rinker recorded his second career hole-in-one recently while playing at Beaver Creek Country Club. He knocked in a shot on the par-3 14th with a 7-iron from 140 yards. He was playing with Don Rupp and Scott Minor.
