Post 202 deflated by Mt. Airy

WILLIAMSPORT -- Williamsport Post 202 started a checklist for all the wrong reasons.

This one wasn't for things to remember. It was more for things to forget.

Williamsport had few things go right on Saturday in 13-3 and 4-2 defeats to lose to Mount Airy in a Western Maryland District American Legion doubleheader.

"Hitting-wise, we did not get the timely hits to score runs," Williamsport coach Duane Myers said. "We left too many men on base. We had a letdown on defense in the first game. We had too many errors. We have to make some improvement in several different areas."

Williamsport never led in either game.

Mount Airy broke through in the nightcap with two runs in the fourth inning. Doug Anuszewski walked and took second on Taylor Henry's sacrifice bunt. Nick Hallis drove in Anuszewski with a double and scored one out later when Mike Virbickis reached on a fielding error.

Hallis finished with three hits to cap a week in which he was named MVP for hitting a grand slam in the MAC Elite Game.

Mount Airy added two runs in the fifth to extend its lead to 4-0. Brian Paulhus drew a one-out walk and scored on Anuszewski's two-run home run.

Williamsport closed to within 4-2 in the fifth inning on Travis Sluger's two-run homer to left after Jared Ferguson reached on a one-out single to left.

Mount Airy pitcher Garrett Price allowed two runs to get the win of outlast Sluger, who took the loss despite allowing only three earned runs.

"We didn't play as well as we liked, but we still got some timely hits in the second game," Mount Airy manager George Richardson said. "We got people on base and we hit the ball when we had to. We scored 13 runs in the first game, but we got seven runs off of their six errors. If they cleaned up their defense, then the first game would have been close like the second game."

Anuszewski and Henry led Mount Airy with three hits each in the opener. Henry had a two-run homer, while Anuszewski had an RBI.

Mount Airy pitcher Tripp Staley allowed three earned runs and three hits, while fanning seven, in six innings for the victory.

Williamsport got all three of its runs in the fifth on a RBI double by Seth Poffenberger, a RBI groundout by J.J. O'Neill and a RBI single by Ferguson.
