Barefoot Sunday an event to collect shoes for needy

June 05, 2009

St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Lappans is going barefoot Sunday.

The congregation is joining with churches and organizations across the country to collect shoes for distribution to those in need, the Rev. Anne Weatherholt said.

Barefoot Sunday invites members to arrive with a pair of shoes and go home "barefoot" to recognize the need around the world of those who have no shoes to wear.

Soles4Souls is the sponsoring nonprofit organization that collects, sorts and distributes thousands of pairs of shoes every year. Founded in the wake of the tsunami in Southeast Asia, this group now serves both the U.S. and countries around the world, helping prevent diseases such as hookworm, which is commonly contracted through bare feet.

St. Mark's members will bring their shoes and be able to worship in their bare feet as an option.

The youth of St. Mark's are sponsoring the event, and hope to meet their goal of 100 pairs of shoes, Weatherholt said. All are welcome to attend and take their shoes, she said.

Services at St. Mark's are at 7:45, 9 and 10:30 a.m.
