Repair work to begin on U.S. 40

June 05, 2009

Work crews from C. William Hetzer Inc. on Monday will begin repairing pavement settlement that developed over a utility trench in one of the lanes of U.S. 40 between Western Maryland Parkway and Nottingham Road, according to a City of Hagerstown press release.

The work is to begin Monday at 7 a.m., weather permitting. It is anticipated the work will be completed by Thursday at 4:30 p.m., according to the release.

The work will require excavation in the lefthand lane of eastbound U.S. 40 and possibly a portion of the righthand lane. Eastbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and shifted around the work area as necessary, according to the release.

Motorists approaching the work zone might encounter drums, barricades, and traffic control signs, according to the release. The contractor plans to use steel plates to secure the work area at the end of each workday and reopen both lanes to traffic until work resumes the following morning, according to the release.

Emergency vehicles will be able to pass through the work zone, although the lane reduction might result in traffic congestion and delays, according to the release.
