Samuel William "Bill" Eshelman, 94, of Hagerstown, Md., formerly of Winchester, Va., died peacefully at home Tuesday, June 2, 2009.

Mr. Eshelman was born Sept. 7, 1914, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Anna Belle McDonald Eshelman and Ashbery R. Eshelman.

He is survived by Lucy Brook McCloy Eshelman, his wife of 65 years; daughter, Martha, and husband, Robert Harshman, of Hagerstown; and two grandchildren, Jason Harshman of Hagerstown and Melissa Harshman of Pompano Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by an infant son.

Bill was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church of Stephenson, Va.

He was a graduate of John Handley High School, Winchester.

After high school, he worked for the Virginia Wooling Co. from 1934 until 1944, when he enlisted in U.S. Navy and served as a medic during World War II. After returning home from serving his country, he worked at Ashworth Brothers Inc. until retirement in 1979.


He was a member of the Izaak Walton League and the Odd Fellows.

He enjoyed working around the home, and in his spare time, he loved fishing, the outdoors and watching the Redskins.

Bill will also be remembered by Hilda Harshman of Hagerstown and the family dog, Teek.

Graveside service will be conducted by Neil Hough and held Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at 1 p.m. in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, with military honors by VFW Post 2123.
