Marsh Cancer Center receives $5,000 from religious council

June 04, 2009

The Hagerstown Area Religious Council presented the John R. Marsh Cancer Center with a donation of $5,000 toward its chaplain program at the council's annual meeting on April 29.

The chaplain program at the cancer center provides spiritual support to cancer patients and their families.

Susan Lopp, director of the cancer center, and staff chaplain Alan Clingan, who oversees the program at the cancer center, accepted the donation.

"Cancer patients have many needs. We are pleased at the John R. Marsh Cancer Center to be able to provide a comprehensive team to support patients through their cancer journey," Lopp said.

"This includes their oncologists, along with registered nurses, radiation therapists, a pharmacist, social workers, a financial counselor and a chaplain for spiritual support."

"HARC was blessed to receive a grant to use in the community," said the Rev. Richard Jewell, Hagerstown Area Religious Council president.

"We discussed possible uses for it, including the chaplain program at the John R. Marsh Cancer Center. We thought that would be an ideal place because there are few people in the community who have not been touched by cancer in some way."
