Frederick kicks off annual Festival of the Arts

June 04, 2009|BY JUL

FREDERICK, Md. -- Shakespearean performances and workshops, an expanded children's area, and a silent auction are new features of the annual Frederick Festival of the Arts.

Also new this year is the admission price. The festival, which used to cost $5 to $7, is now free, said Apple Reese, marketing and development director for the Frederick Arts Council.

The arts council took over the event this year and wanted to give everyone in the Frederick area an equal opportunity to attend and take advantage of the variety of entertainment, Reese said. Previously, the event was run by its own organization.

The festival will be held Saturday and Sunday in Carroll Creek Linear Park in downtown Frederick.

In previous years, if the weather was good, the two-day festival drew up to 20,000 people from the four-state area and D.C., Reese said.

Two stages will host 11 musical acts on Saturday, including classical, progressive folk-rock, Dixieland music, alternative rock/funk, blues, acoustic rock, bluegrass, and more. Sunday's lineup of seven acts includes classic jazz, country bluegrass, classic rock, acoustic folk and rock and post-funk.

The Shakespeare stage will have performances and workshops both days. Performances include a show of Shakespeare's greatest hits and an abbreviated telling of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" involving the audience. Workshops include a sword-fight demo Saturday and a stage-combat workshop Sunday.

A juried art exhibit featuring the work of 110 artists and craftspeople from 20 states will provide a varied scope of artwork, Reese said. Media include metal, glass, fiber, clay, paintings, photography, digital works, wood and jewelry. Artists will do demos working with clay, metal and wood.

The children's area will have a petting zoo on Saturday, karaoke, hair styling, chalk drawing, and boards in front of which families can pose for photos in the style of recognizable artwork, such as the Mona Lisa.

A silent art auction will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Cultural Arts Center, 15 W. Patrick St., to benefit the festival.
