Fire destroys Martinsburg area home

June 03, 2009

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. -- A fire that appeared to start in the garage of a single-family home in Ridgefield subdivision on Wednesday afternoon destroyed the Martinsburg area residence, according to Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Co. Capt. Brian Mulligan.

No one was injured, Mulligan said.

The estimated loss of the single-story, wood frame home and contents at 342 Dinali Drive was estimated to be about $300,000, Mulligan said.

Mulligan declined to identify the property owner, but 2008 county tax records indicate the home is owned by Robert L. Prevallet.

The American Red Cross was assisting with emergency housing, Mulligan said.

The fire was reported at 2:20 p.m., and firefighters had the blaze under control just after 3 p.m., Mulligan said.

A neighboring home received some exterior damage from the fire, which remains under investigation by West Virginia State Fire Marshal's office, Mulligan said.

Volunteers from Hedgesville were joined at the scene by members of Bedington Volunteer Fire Department, the Berkeley County's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management and the Sheriff's Department, officials said.
