Truck crashes onto railroad tracks

A man was airlifted to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on Wednesday morning after a truck he was driving went down an embankment and landed on Norfolk Southern railroad tracks, a Washington County Emergency Services dispatcher said.

Eastbound Interstate 70 east of the the Interstate 81 exchange was closed for more than an hour following the crash, which took place at about 5:30 a.m. near the former Allegheny Energy headquarters building on Downsville Pike, the dispatcher said.

Rail traffic was halted while railroad crews arranged to remove the U-Haul box truck from the tracks, he said.

Maryland State Police, EMS units and the State Highway Administration were on the scene.
