Ballroom dancing

The AARP Chapter 623 will hold its spring luncheon at Western Sizzlin' Tuesday at 1 p.m. The luncheon costs $10.30 plus tip.

Brook Lane family day



Brook Lane campus will hold family day Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The free event will include children's games, petting zoo, moon bounce, face painting, a clown making balloon sculptures, croquet and bocce ball. Concessions and homemade ice cream will be available at old-fashioned prices. An auction will be included.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Chapter 462 in Smithsburg will meet at Smithsburg's Veterans Park Thursday for the chapter's first walk in the park this year.

The group will meet rain or shine. Weigh-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and a short meeting will be held at 6 p.m. The walk around the park will be held after the meeting.

Smithsburg Middle



Congratulations to Amber Madigan, sixth-grade math teacher, who was named a finalist for WCPS Teacher of the Year.

Congratulations to Matthew Sprecher, who was awarded the Washington County Community Youth Meritorious Award for leadership and service to home, school and community. Matthew was honored and received a $100 U.S. savings bond.

Smithsburg High School



The Smithsburg High School PTSA still has a few 2009 bonus books for sale. They are now half price at $15. All the coupons are good through December. If you're interested in purchasing one, call the school at 301-766-8337.

Library news



The Friends of the Washington County Free Library is sponsoring two Spanish classes at the Smithsburg Library for elementary students this summer.

The first class is for students entering grades three and four and will be held from June 22 to 26 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The second class will be from July 27 to 31 for students entering grades five and six from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Registration of students is required. To register, call the Smithsburg Library at 301-824-7722. The instructor is Uriel Galvan, a teacher at North Hagerstown High School.
