Tech High student to attend West Point

June 01, 2009

Washington County Technical High School senior Sean Karraker of Boonsboro is headed to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Sean, a senior in pre-engineering, has been pursuing his dream since early in his junior year.

Sean had already been offered an ROTC scholarship at Penn State Mont Alto, Virginia Tech, The Citadel, Embry-Riddle and the University of Maryland. The Virginia Tech scholarship included room and board.

Sean's father, Dale Karraker, gives much of the credit for Sean's success to Tech High.

"Sean is a shining example of what can occur when you have a focused and challenging curriculum, a dedicated faculty, and parents that pay attention and are partners in their children's education," Dale Karraker said.

"Anyone who may feel that going to Tech is 'opting out' of college or is in some way 'not as good' as the regular high schools is mistaken. Sean's mother and I feel that the exact opposite is true. From the very beginning of his time at Tech, he has felt challenged and rewarded, and leaves home for school each day with purpose and eagerness."

The faculty and staff at the school said they are proud of Sean and his accomplishments. They have no doubt that he will be a success at West Point and be a great service to the country.
