Charles Town Races & Slots plans to increase purses

June 01, 2009

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- Charles Town Races & Slots says it's upping purses for some of its horse races.

The track says it's adding $1,000 for each horse that increases the field beyond six entrants in all allowance races beginning Saturday.

The track says the same deal applies to all $12,500 and $16,000 claiming races.

Charles Town says the incentives won't apply to maiden special weight races. And the track says its 6-furlong size limits races to 10 starters, making the maximum increase $4,000.

Racing secretary Randy Wehrman says the track is taking the step because of competition from other tracks in the region.
