CLEAR SPRING -- Vera Virginia Kretzer, 87, of 16505 Virginia Ave., Williamsport, Md., formerly of 13324 Blairs Valley Road, Clear Spring, Md., passed away Friday, May 29, 2009, at Homewood Nursing Home.

Born April 30, 1922, in Clear Spring, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Blanche Carbaugh Rowland.

She married Marshall Cleveland Kretzer of Clear Spring on Aug. 24, 1940; together, they owned and operated Cloverdale Dairy in Williamsport until their retirement in the late 1980s.

Vera was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Clear Spring. She was also a member of the Dry Run Homemakers Club and the Wilson Ruritan Auxiliary.


She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall C. Kretzer, on Feb. 23, 2009.

She is survived by a son, Dean R. Kretzer of Williamsport; three daughters, Judith K. Hoffman and friend, Don Baker, of Hagerstown, Fonda S. Newkirk and husband, Bill, of Williamsport, and Cindy L. Stoneburner and husband, Jim, of Williamsport; six grandchildren, Todd Elwood, Craig Elwood and Wendy Mills, all of Clear Spring, Scott Kretzer and Kristin Hoffman, both of Hagerstown; and Gabe Kretzer of Hancock; 11 great-grandchildren, Sam, Sarah, Lakyn, C.J., Maggie, Bradly, Jesse, Jorden, Theo, Harley and Tanner; one brother, Robert L. Rowland and wife, Faye, of Clear Spring; and one sister, Louise McKee of Clear Spring.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Doris Stouffer, and two brothers, Daniel Rowland and Dale Rowland.

Services will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Clear Spring. The Rev. W. Allen Reed will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Donald Edwin Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 13607 National Pike, Clear Spring. For the convenience of friends, you may visit the funeral home after noon.
