Steps for Steph

May 30, 2009|By KATE S. ALEXANDER

More than 200 people and 50 dogs walked around Greencastle to raise money for local homeless animals Saturday in the 2nd Annual Steps for Steph Benefit Walk and Softball Tournament. The 2-mile walk and two-day tournament will benefit area animal shelters.

Before an accident took her life, Stephanie Zeis spent much of her free time volunteering at the local humane society and playing softball, said her aunt, Angie Miller.

Miller was pleased with the turnout Saturday, and said that more than 225 people registered to walk and 15 teams were scheduled for the tournament.

"This is wonderful," she said. "The weather and all the dogs cooperated."

This year, organizers thanked their four-legged supporters with a contest judging the cutest, hairiest, and best-dressed dogs, along with those best at doing tricks and in a look-alike category.
