May 29, 2009

VIENNA, W.Va. -- Ripley left no doubt which softball team was the best in West Virginia's Class AAA.

Hedgesville (22-5) had to settle for second place on Thursday, losing twice to Ripley, including a 16-1 thumping in the championship round.

Six players had at least two hits as Ripley (30-1) pounded out 16 in all in the final game. An 11-run fourth inning ended all suspense.

The tournament started Wednesday, with Hedgesville defeating Wheeling Park 3-1 in the Eagles' opener.

Ripley defeated Hedgesville 8-0 early Thursday to knock the Eagles into the losers' bracket of the four-team tournament. Ally Southall allowed just two hits in six innings and struck out nine for Ripley, which advanced to the championship round with the victory.

The Eagles bounced back to defeat Logan 7-5 in the losers' bracket final and reach the championship round. Jess Shirley doubled, homered and drove in four runs, and Samantha Nazelrod had two hits and two RBIs for the Eagles, who broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run sixth inning. Shirley scattered 11 hits to earn the victory.

Hedgesville would have had to defeat Ripley twice in the championship round to win the state title.

Shirley and Nazelrod were named to the all-tournament team for the Eagles. Shirley went 2-1 with a 1.94 ERA in the tournament and hit .300 with four RBIs. Nazelrod hit .500 with three RBIs.
