HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Etta May Johnson, 59, of Hedgesville, died Wednesday, May 27, 2009, at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, Md.

Born Oct. 30, 1949, in East Derry, N.H., she was the daughter of Gladys Marion Buel Johnson of Great Cacapon, W.Va., and the late Milton A. Johnson.

She graduated from high school in Goffstown, N.H., and from Alderson-Broaddus College in Philippi, W.Va., with a physician's assistant certification.

She served in the U.S. Army in active service for 12 years.

She currently was employed by the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va., and formerly by the Tri-State Community Health Center in Hancock, Md., and Graves Medical Practice Inc. in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.


She was a member of Alderton-Dawson American Legion Post 60, National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, Maryland Academy of Physician Assistants and American Academy of Physician Assistants.

In addition to her mother, Ms. Johnson is survived by a twin sister, Essie Upton of Goffstown; four brothers, Michael Johnson of Great Cacapon, Doug Johnson and Carl Johnson, both of Manchester, N.H., and Walt Johnson of Goffstown; a companion, Pat Crowl of Hedgesville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Along with her father, she was preceded in death by one brother, Edward Johnson.

Funeral services will be Monday, June 1, at 11 a.m. at Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union St., Berkeley Springs, with Pastor Dick Voorhaar officiating. Interment will follow in Mount Nebo Cemetery, Great Cacapon, with military graveside honors by the Tri-State Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
