May 26, 2009

MERCERSBURG, Pa. -- About 200 people participated in Mercersburg's first Mini-Relay for Life last weekend, event organizers said.

"We're pretty sure we'll hit our goal of $10,000," said Chris Ardinger, co-chairman of the event, which benefits the American Cancer Society.

Proceeds will be divided among full Relay for Life events held in Greencastle, Pa., Chambersburg, Pa., and Fulton County in Pennsylvania.

The event kicked off around 5 p.m. Friday at the James Buchanan High School track; the opening ceremony was at 6 p.m. Fifteen teams registered.

Bruster's Ice Cream, inflatable games and a movie provided entertainment through the night. Ardinger said the luminaria service was popular.

"I can see it becoming a full-blown relay in the future," he said.
