Officials gear up for annual Blues Fest

May 26, 2009

The City of Hagerstown is gearing up for this weekend's 14th annual Western Maryland Blues Fest and on Tuesday, city officials held a press conference to tout the event.

Carl Disque, Western Maryland Blues Fest chairman, praised volunteers and city employees "for making Blues Fest a reality each year."

Disque said this year's event will feature 17 acts, including Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, which was named Band of the Year at the 2009 Blues Music Awards, and The Derek Trucks Band.

Trucks recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine as one of "the new guitar gods."

Tom Riford, president and CEO of the Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said Blues Fest brings about $2.5 million in revenue to Hagerstown and Washington County.

Blues Fest will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday in Park Plaza next to the University System of Maryland at Hagerstown. The event will move downtown to the Central Lot on Friday and Saturday, and wind up Sunday at City Park.
