E. Russell Hicks band performs at state festival

May 26, 2009

Under the direction of Michele Hull and Betty Sue Kitchen, the E. Russell Hicks Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade concert bands recently participated in the Maryland State Band Festival at Clarksburg High School in Montgomery County, Md.

The bands were eligible to compete in the festival after receiving "superior" ratings at the Washington County Band Festival in April.

As the only middle school bands representing Washington County at the state festival - Smithsburg Middle School was eligible but was unable to attend - E. Russell Hicks students received solid marks as they performed in front of four adjudicators (judges) and other state bands participating in the event.

The seventh-grade band played "Windermere Overture" as its warm-up piece, followed by "High Sierras" and "Prelude and Dance," which were scored by the adjudicators.

The eighth-grade band played "Winchester March" as its warm-up, followed by "Overture in C Minor" and "Nathan Hale Trilogy" for adjudication.

The band directors were pleased that the bands had the opportunity to participate in this year's festival, and were proud of their musicians' achievements.

This is the second year E. Russell Hicks was eligible to compete at the state level. Last year, the eighth-grade band received "superior" ratings at the county and state festivals.
